West Des Moines Library, Community Room

The Block Kids Program was created in 1990 to introduce children in grades 1-6 to the construction industry.  Since launching the program, more than 300,000 children have participated.  It is a fun, creative program that will engage students.

Kids are given a maximum of one hour to use their blocks and selected items to build a project that is in some way related to the construction industry.

Items used:
  • Interlocking blocks (25-100)
  • 3 of the following items in any combination:
    • Small rock
    • String
    • Foil
    • Poster board
Once completed, judges will ask the participants about their project.
  • Why did they chose to build this project?
  • What do they like about it?
  • Is there anything you would change?
  • How will it be used?
Projects are scored on:
  • Oral presentation
  • Enthusiasm
  • Creativity
  • Use of materials
  • Attention to detail
  • Reason for participation
Projects are judged at the local, regional and national level.  Prizes are awarded to the top three national winners.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners of the local Des Moines Chapter program.  More prizes will be awarded too!

Please complete the attached registration form/release for each child.
